The Playstation 3 is the third home video game console produced by Sony Computer Entertainment and successor to the Playstation 2.
The PlayStation 3 as standard will play Blu-ray and DVD format movies, but not HD DVD. A remote control can be purchased separately to aid the controlling of the console when viewing movies.
The PlayStation 3 is optimised for high definition televisions, although will function perfectly fine on older low resolution TVs.
The PlayStation 3 controller has built in motion sensing, with the ability to register movement of the remote via a accelerometer. Unlike the Nintendo Wiis remote, the PS3 controller does not have the ability to register it's controllers orientation relative to the screen. Currently there is not a great use of motion controls in PS3 games.
The PlayStation 3 is supplied with a built in hard drive of either 20GB, 40GB, 60GB or 80GB is size. This drive is used to store all saved games and data, and an additional memory card is not required.
Backwards compatability for PS2 games is available on the 20GB, 60GB, and 80GB models, but not the newer 40GB model.
Yes, games can be played online.
